Dr. Itay Greenspan  and Dr.  Tanhum Yoreh  A Distinct Jewish Environmental Movement? Structural and Ethical Considerations

Dr. Itay Greesnpan is from the school of social work and social welfare of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Dr. Tanhum Yoreh is from the school of the environment of the University of Toronto

In the past two decades, we have witnessed the rise of numerous environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) rooted in, or guided by, Jewish values and Jewish traditions. In a parallel development, we have also observed the engagement of various Jewish institutions – synagogues, congregations and communities alike – in pro-environmental initiatives. These intersecting trends, and the magnitude of actors involved in such trends, are the subject of our inquiry, which is focused on two main categories of questions:

Structural:

1) Do the many organizations and communities linking together Jewish and environmental values form a distinct structure of a Jewish environmental movement?

Ethical:

2) What are the Jewish and environmental values expressed within these organizations and communities?

3) Are these values shared among the different actors, or do they express themselves differently based on theological orientation (eg. Reform vs. Orthodox)?

4) Many Jewish environmental initiatives are described in terms of social action. Is social welfare an essential component of Jewish environmentalism, or can Jewish environmentalism be expressed independently of social welfare?

Our research design includes both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Quantitatively, we will compile profiles and data of Jewish ENGOs in Canada, Israel and the United States. Using a snowball method enhanced by online data searches, we will aim to form a census of all organizations self-identified as rooted in Jewish environmental values and all congregations having environmental programs. In addition to reports and data available online, the researchers will design an online survey tool, which will be disseminated among organizations. The gathered information will include organizational characteristics, leadership structures, mission statements, scope of activities, size of organizations, date of founding, key figures, and networks and connectivity questions to learn about the structure of the field.

Qualitatively, we will interview a cross-section of key figures from at least ten initiatives and organizations in each of the three countries. The interviews will include a number of key figures from each organization (e.g. the director, the chairperson of the board and a staff member). Through these individuals we will explore multiple perspectives within and across organizations. In these interviews, we will explore multiple perspectives within and across the organizations on the links between environmental activism, social welfare, and Judaism. We will pay particular attention to the question of how the mission statements reflect Jewish values that act as the basis of environmental activism, and which kind of Jewish values these missions reflect.
